Although not found in every autistic child, some will cause themselves injury by hitting themselves, banging their heads or inappropriately playing with dangerous objects. Autistic children, therefore, need much more supervision than normal children. Sometimes medication or physical restraint is required to keep them from harming themselves. When these tendencies get out of hands and parents are overwhelmed it may become necessary to institutionalize the autistic child. Children who display such symptoms are not necessarily autistic, but they always need to be diagnosed and treated by experts.
Austistic individuals are reluctant to change and function better with a regular repetitive routine. Most of their routines are self developed such as how they stand or move. Most of them will become agitated or confused if a change is forced upon them. Taking into consideration how change affects the autistic person is an important factor in treating this condition.
